When I first began the tile trade over 25 years ago small 4x4 ceramic tile where common in shower stalls and bathroom floors, and 8x8 tile was very common for most kitchen and foyer floors. Boy am I glad that has changed. 100% of my remodeling projects consist of removing and replacing small tile with much larger tile which is the common trend now, and I don't think that will change anytime soon.
My most common remodeling projects are shower stall conversions, especially removing old bathtubs and building custom tiled walk in shower stalls with frameless glass doors. The larger tiles, especially those that are rectangle shaped set in an off-set pattern (brick style) is a very hot look and trending.
Earth tone colors are hot, not only are they elegant but also are very good at hiding common smudges and stains until clean up time. Stone tiles are having a comeback as well, especially travertine tile on shower walls and for recessed soap niches.
For custom tiled shower pans the stone look is also trending either in the river rock, or pebbles to random pieces look. It creates and brings the outdoor excitement to the indoors.
